It’s Termite Awareness Week
FAIRFAX, Va. (March 25, 2013) – Today kicks off Termite Awareness Week, an annual observance by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and Chase’s Calendar of Events to promote public vigilance against termites.
Termites are one of the most destructive pests, feeding on the cellulose found in wood and paper products during the spring season. They can cause $5 billion worth of property damage annually, an expense that isn’t typically covered under homeowners’ insurance policies.
Termites cannot be controlled with do-it-yourself measures, but there are many steps homeowners can take to help prevent this pest from causing a serious problem. NPMA experts recommend routinely inspecting the foundation of the home for signs of mud tubes, cracked or bubbling paint and wood that sounds hollow when tapped. In addition, homeowners should reduce moisture around the home, monitor all exterior areas of wood and seal cracks on the outside of the structure.
If homeowners suspect a termite infestation, they should contact a licensed pest professional immediately to determine the extent of the problem and receive a recommendation of an appropriate course of treatment.
