Public Service Announcement Focusing on Pests as Vectors of Disease

Illnesses spread by pests, including Zika, malaria and dengue, are causing a major health crisis around the world. These and other vector-borne diseases result in more than 1 million deaths each year. Fortunately, we don't face the same level of threat here in the United States; however, it's important not to let our guard down and take steps to avoid contact with the dangerous pests like mosquitoes and ticks that spread these diseases.

Consider these facts:

  • As many as 300,000 Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year, according to 2013 estimates from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, only 30,000 cases are typically reported.
  • Lyme disease cases are concentrated in the Northeast and upper Midwest, with 14 states accounting for over 96% of cases reported to CDC.
