Mosquito Predators: What Eats Mosquitoes?

Nothing ruins a perfect summer evening like a bite from a pesky mosquito. These pests are extremely bothersome, known for transmitting diseases to humans and, unfortunately, often buzz around unnoticed until you’ve been bitten.

If you’ve ever wondered whether anything out there helps control them, the good news is yes—there are several bugs that eat mosquitoes and other natural mosquito predators. They include:

  1. Dragonflies
  2. Birds such as Purple Martins
  3. Bats
  4. Frogs
  5. Mosquitofish
  6. Copepodes (small crustaceans)
  7. Damselflies

These are just a few examples of insects and animals that help reduce mosquito populations in nature.

Do Mosquito Eaters Eat Mosquitoes?

Many people assume the “mosquito eater,” or Crane Fly, feeds on mosquitoes. Despite their menacing appearance, crane flies don’t actually eat mosquitoes at all. They feed on plant nectar, not bugs.

How to Prevent Mosquitoes

While it’s nice to know some creatures eat mosquitoes, you shouldn’t rely on them for complete pest control. Prevention is the best way to protect yourself and your family from mosquitoes.

According to Michael Bentley, Ph.D., entomologist for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), “Avoid outside activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. If you are going to be outside, wear light-colored clothing and always use insect repellent with at least 20-percent DEET or another EPA-registered insect repellent. If it is cool enough, wear long sleeves and pants to cover up as much exposed skin as possible. If you're struggling with mosquitoes on your property, be sure to contact a licensed pest control professional to treat the problem.”
