What Do Stink Bugs Smell Like? How to Get Rid of Stink Bug Smells

Stink bugs, aptly named for the unpleasant odor they release when disturbed or crushed, are a nuisance many homeowners experience, especially during the fall and winter months. The chemical that creates their pungent smell is produced in a gland on their abdomen, and some species are even capable of spraying the chemical several inches!

Stink bugs smell like strong herbs and spices, like cilantro and coriander. The chemical composition of their odor includes compounds used as food additives as well as those found in cilantro, explaining the similarity in scent. They may also smell like skunk or burnt rubber.

How to Get Rid of Stink Bug Smell?

The smell of stink bugs can linger for hours, so if one gets inside your home, it’s important to act quickly to minimize the scent. Avoid crushing them, as this triggers the foul scent they’re known for, which comes from glands on the sides of their bodies. Instead, one of the most effective ways to get rid of stink bug smell is to use a vacuum, but be sure to immediately discard the vacuum bag to avoid the smell lingering in the vacuum and your home!
