Tree Termites Invade Florida

FAIRFAX, Va. (November 28, 2012) – Stubborn tree termites have moved into Dania Beach and experts are conferring on how to battle the pests, the Miami Herald reports.

Experts think the termites arrived from the Caribbean through ports, and then landed in Dania Beach. The species was first introduced to the U.S. in 2001 and was believed to be eradicated until the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS) recently confirmed the reemergence of this pest in Broward County, Florida.

Unlike most termites, the tree termite does not rely on underground tunneling to travel. Instead, they forage on the ground like ants, allowing them to spread quickly.

Because of their unique habits, tree termites have proven difficult to control with existing treatment methods. The nest must be located and destroyed, and the structure may require repeated treatments in order to gain control.
