Summer Allergy Awareness

FAIRFAX, Va. (July 18, 2014) – Seasonal allergies are common for many people, but there are more outdoor allergy risks than just pollen and grass. About two million Americans are at risk for a life-threatening allergic reaction to insect bites or stings.

The most common culprits are wasps, yellowjackets and fire ants. These pests are the most active during the warm summer months, so people with known allergies to stings should use extra caution when spending time outdoors.

Most pests use stinging or biting as a form of defense, so it is important to wear shoes when walking through grass and to avoid areas with a lot of flying insects, as a nest may be close by. If you are stung, prompt removal of the stinger ensures that the least amount of venom gets injected.
