Plague in the Southwest

FAIRFAX, Va. (May 7, 2014) – A man in New Mexico has been confirmed as the state’s first patient with the plague in 2014.

The New Mexico Department of Health is investigating to be sure there is no ongoing risk to others in the area. Plague is a bacterial disease usually transmitted to humans by infected fleas that have fed on rodents, but can also be transmitted by direct contact with infected wildlife.

New Mexico saw 4 cases of the plague in 2013.
