It’s Bed Bug Awareness Week
FAIRFAX, Va. (April 22, 2013) – Today marks the start of Bed Bug Awareness Week, an observance that encourages public awareness of this blood-sucking pest.
Bed bugs continue to plague Americans as they infest hotels, schools, residences and other places where people gather. A 2012 survey, conducted by NPMA and the University of Kentucky, found that 99.6 percent of pest professionals had encountered bed bugs in the past year; a number that has steadily risen over a 10-year period. Adding to the problem is the fact that according to 76 percent of pest professionals, bed bugs are considered the most difficult pest to treat.
To prevent an infestation, experts stress that vigilance is key. However, if one suspects bed bugs in the home, it’s important to contact a pest professional to treat the problem because they are not a DIY pest.
