Invasive Species in Hawaii
FAIRFAX, Va. (December 31, 2013) – The Hawaiian Department of Agriculture works to preserve the ecosystems of each island and prevent invasive species from gaining a foothold. However, recent reports show that a species of fire ant has island-hopped from Hawaii Island to Oahu and Maui.
Department officials have linked the infestation to plants shipped to nurseries on the two islands, and they are working with consumers to contain the situation.
