Hantavirus Warning for Mountain Region

FAIRFAX, Va. (April 28, 2014) – Camping season is just getting started and already three states are warning consumers about the dangers of Hantavirus.

Colorado recently reported its first case of the disease since 2012, and officials in Montana and Texas are preemptively warning park-goers of the early-season risks. Hantavirus is spread to humans by the urine and feces of rodents like deer mice.

Cabin owners and campers may be at risk of contracting the virus as they are cleaning out or staying in structures that have been empty all winter.
