First Cases of West Nile Virus Being Reported
FAIRFAX, Va. (June 1, 2013) – Summer is a time for vacations and relaxing in the sunshine, but it’s also a season when many stinging and biting pests emerge in full force. Last year marked the deadliest West Nile Virus season on record, and officials are being proactive about detecting the disease this summer.
Mosquitoes in several states, including California and Tennessee, have already tested positive for West Nile Virus and this past week, the first human case of West Nile was confirmed in Texas – the epicenter of last year’s outbreak.
The NPMA suggests following these simple tips to eliminate mosquitoes on your property and reduce the health risk posed by this summertime pest.
- Eliminate areas of standing water around the home such as flowerpots, birdbaths, baby pools, grill covers and other objects where water collects. Mosquitoes need only about 1/2 inch of water to breed.
- Screen all windows and doors. Repair even the smallest tear or hole.
- Minimize outside activity between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
- If you must spend time outdoors during peak mosquito times, use an insect repellant containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon-eucalyptus.
- Avoid wearing dark colors and floral prints, loose-fitting garments, open-toe shoes and sweet-smelling perfumes or colognes.
- If you are concerned about mosquito activity on your property, contact a pest management company or your local mosquito abatement district.
