First Case of West Nile Virus Reported
FAIRFAX, Va. (April 9, 2013) – Spring has barely begun, but the first human West Nile virus case for 2013 has already been reported in Madison County, MS, according to the Clarion Ledger. Last year, Mississippi had 247 WNV cases and five deaths.
As the weather continues to warm, it's impossible to expect people to stay indoors to avoid mosquitoes. But, there are many things people can do to both eliminate mosquito breeding grounds on their own property and to protect themselves from mosquito bites this spring and summer.
The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recommends eliminating areas of standing water around the home, screening all windows and doors, and using an insect repellant containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon-eucalyptus.
