Crazy Ants Invade the South

FAIRFAX, Va. (May 22, 2013) – Fire ants have long been a threat in the southern United States, but this invasive species may have met its match. Another invasive species known as the crazy ant is taking over in many invaded areas.  According to FOX News, a study published inBiological Invasions found that there were little to no fire ants present in areas that were infested with crazy ants.

Unlike fire ants, crazy ants are erratic in behavior and usually nest in homes, specifically underneath floors or carpeting, in potted plants and in wall voids. While this species doesn’t sting like fire ants do, they often damage electrical equipment by swarming inside appliances.
