STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Officials at New Dorp High School sent out notices to parents after one specimen of bed bug was found in a classroom at the school, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education confirmed.

There were no other specimens discovered at the school, Marge Feinberg told the Advance in an e-mail.

"Every time we find a single bed bug, we are required to report it," she said. "Schools are not hospitable environments for bed bugs and are brought in from the outside, usually in a bag or on clothing."
