Got Bed Bugs? Tips To Let You Sleep Tight (West Lafayette, IN)

LAFAYETTE, IN - Don't feel alone if you discover bedbugs in your home.  Exterminators in the Greater Lafayette area said it's a problem they see almost every day.

Reliable Exterminators President Bob Hanstra demonstrated some methods of treatment to NewsChannel 18.  Hanstra said his company gets phone calls almost every day for people dealing with bed bugs.

People can pick them up almost anywhere, hotel rooms, schools, airplanes, even movie theaters.

Hanstra said almost all household possessions can be saved, though cleaning up mattresses, box springs and stuffed furniture like couches can be tricky.

"Don't panic," said Hanstra. "Don't necessarily buy the over-the-counter products and the foggers at the big box stores because most of those things don't work. Call in some professional advice and help to get rid of them.  Be prepared to do some work and they can be gotten rid of."

Hanstra estimated the average insecticide treatment will run anywhere from $500 to $1,000.

He believes bedbugs can survive for a year and a half without a food source.

One frightening thought,  if you think you're immune to getting bedbugs, according to the pest control company Orkin, in the first four months of 2011, Indianapolis had the 22nd most cases of bed bugs in the country.  Fort Wayne had the 45th most.
